Born in Paintsville, Kentucky and raised in Wabash, Indiana, Crystal Gayle, originally Brenda Gail Webb, followed in the footsteps of her older sister Loretta Lynn. However, while Loretta was firmly rooted in traditional country music, Crystal Gayle leaned more towards the pop end of the country spectrum. In 1977, she achieved her biggest hit with the chart-topping single "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." Over the course of the following decade, she recorded for various major labels, including United Artists, Columbia, Elektra, and Warner Bros., releasing nine Top-10 country albums, four of which were certified gold and two platinum. Her remarkable success was further underscored when she won the Country Music Association's award for Female Vocalist of the Year in both 1977 and 1978. Crystal Gayle also made history as the first country artist to visit China, appearing in a Bob Hope TV special in 1979.
